Studies, Chapter I: On the Plaid

For Milan Design Week 2026, Loro Piana introduces Studies, Chapter I: On the Plaid, the first of a series of case studies examining a specific object, function, or use. Plaids, central elements of the interior vocabulary, were among the House’s first finished products and served as a field of experimentation, where materials and techniques could be explored with creativity and precision. This installation makes visible a culture of excellence rooted in fibre and craft.

Visit the exhibition at via della Moscova 33 from Tuesday, April 21st, to Sunday, April 26th, between 10:00 am and 8:00 pm.

Loro Piana Sceneries

Structured as a passage, the installation opens with a series of scenes that evoke the landscapes and lifestyle integral to the House – recalling the poetic spirit of Valsesia, along with mountain terrains and journeys in nature. Together, they create a panorama of places, activities, and environments that express the Maison’s art of living.

Codes of the House

The second section introduces iconic emblems that form the language of Loro Piana. From The Suitcase Stripe to the Belt, these motifs are reinterpreted on the plaids, demonstrating how functional elements and internal references can evolve into lasting visual codes.

Botanical Repertoire

The third part explores Loro Piana’s botanical signifiers, where nature, material, and savoir-faire come together. Historically used to brush wool and cashmere fabrics, the thistle symbolises a long-standing commitment to craft, while the flax flower reflects the seasonal dimension of the House’s fibres.

Paisley Cardo

The journey continues as it moves through the paisley motif, associated with movement, imagination, and a spirit of exploration. Appearing in the House’s fabric collections since the late 1960s, the pattern has become a recurring element across shawls and plaids.

Textured Abstractions

The final section moves towards more abstract compositions. The design emerges through texture, volume, and material rather than figurative motifs. The plaid becomes a field for research in surface and textile construction.
